Just plain "AWESOMENESS"!! Our revised hiking route took us from Max Patch Mountain, with its stunning views (see attached photos) along the Appalachian Trail as it crossed back and forth through parts of Tennessee and North Carolina. While conducting our equipment checklist before heading out "The Puking of our Packs" for nonessential gear, my spoon accidentally left behind with the other discarded gear, which was my fault for not double checking. This is just me, but I'm really not fond of making time to engage in an exercise routine and I'm always looking for excuses to skip, but this is really important because of the remote areas that may not be assessable for a prompt evacuation

Appalachian Trail Hiking Gear : Trail Journals, Backpacking and Hiking Journals
I carry this one because it is a pound ligher than the MSR Hubba I bought for the PCT and because I felt like I was trapped in a coffin sleeping in the Hubba's narrow walls. They do fell wet and so I need an insert with them but back to the positive - in 65 miles during 5 days last October I wore them with a nylon sock insert and had zero blisters
Appalachian Trail Thru Hike Journal 2003
It transpired that a section hiker called 'Artful Dodger' hadn't been able to make it to the trail this year, so had instead sent money to the place to pay for hikers' meals. Jack annoyingly flicks through tv channels, pausing only to hurl abuse at anti-war types in the news or check out whatever mullet-wearing cracker spawn are on CMT

Appalachian Trail Thru Hike - Planning Tips
Most people who do try to stick to a schedule on the Appalachian Trail fail to do so or find it too confining and illogical within the first few weeks, if not the first few days. There are, however, certain things you can plan for and count on when setting out for an end-to-end Appalachian Trail thru hike (or even a really long section), regardless of which direction you hike, your experience level, or what Mother Nature and other forces lay in your path
Being of a darker complexion, I expected to gradually bronze up like a shiny leather lion, but after the first week my skin was closer to the red sheen of a baboon butt. After all, at the end of a long, rainy walk to a road, there were people with magical machines who were willing to transport me to hot food for the price of a good story
Weather permitting, we'll summit Mount Washington! Along the way, we'll take in incredible sweeping vistas, study rare alpine vegetation, bask in gorgeous sunrises and sunsets, and experience the charm and camaraderie of these remote mountain huts. I love REI products, so I decided to try the travel piece upon recommendation from a friend I met during a Yosemite trip with a different outfitter. What was the highlight of your trip?:All of it
There were numerous signs asking hikers to respect the rare and fragile alpine vegetation, and if there was any doubt, the trickling Thoreau spring was a gentle reminder that we were upon a special place in the heart of Maine. The northern end of the MAT is anchored by the 100-Mile Wilderness, revered for being such a long stretch of untamed forest with no designated resupply points
He hurried on to bag the peak and hike back down the Saddleback side to his campsite at Piazza Rock Tent Site before the storm hit.Mist on SaddlebackI covered the distance to Saddleback quickly, passing the huge bolts that had been used to hold an old fire tower on top of the peak. I pointed my camera and took a picture hoping something would be visible later in the photo.Partial Clearing on The HornThe cloud cover was intermittent, a good sign
Section Hiking the Appalachian Trail
As we want to continue sectioning north, but don't want to tackle the hardest part of New York first, we're jumping ahead to Kent, CT and hiking southbound (SOBO) to NY 17A. This year I plan to annotate the zipcodes of nearby towns on my hiking schedule so I can get updated weather from Google as I work south along the Applachian Trail

Yes, it dares to mention bridges, highways, and other claptrap of modern human development, but the AT's lofty achievement is to provide us respite from that...and you've got to get to the trail somehow! Clear maps, good descriptions, nice design, and nifty tidbits on local history and more- a great package. What they've done is to visit places where the AT crosses roads (in many places without actually getting out of the car: some of the road crossings they depict don't even have parking available) and take pictures
I stopped at the next shelter around 10 miles in and they came in about one hour later.Just looking at their packs, they did exactly what your instincts tell you to do, what the REI salesman wants you to do, and what Phillip tells you never to do. However, so the full story is told, there are nasty uncontrollables that infrequently pop up on any trail, not just the AT, that a rookie, all of us really MUST be aware of
How much prep time would you recommend? Rucking 20 or more miles or land naving 40k through thick swamp and jungle is something I have just woken up and done on any given training day many times but 2100+ miles is quite a bit different. It is usually legal to camp just about anywhere along the trail, except in Great Smoky Mountains National Park where there are some restrictions It can be cold and snowy early in the year or at the end depending on when you finish
