You can not have more than one active Soul Trap at a time.If you would rather use the Soul Trap weapon enchant, then first you must find a weapon with the Soul Trap enchant on it in order to disenchant. This will give you a lot more charges than normal, and you just need to get the killing blow with that weapon in order to fill your soul gems.Whichever method you use, when you are successful in killing a creature using Soul Trap, it will show a message at the top saying if it was successful or not

Other then that, as you lvl up, you'll start finding them more and more through raiding the dougens (forgive the spelling please) But I'm' still trying to figure it out how to acquire a lot of them, I remember back in Oblivion, there was a a casket or whatever you would place Grand Soul gems and after one night pass, they'll turn black. (Not exactly sure, and haven't really been paying attention to the date in the game) If so then Illinata's Deep, the old ruin thing by the Lady Stone would be an excellent place to collect them

This issue has been addressed by version 1.0 of the Unofficial Skyrim Patch; only gems not filled to capacity will empty when dropped, fully filled gems will not lose their charge. This allows you to clear out an unwanted soul from a soul gem (for example, if you put a petty soul into a greater soul gem) without losing the soul gem itself
