How do I run an anti-virus scan if I can't boot?

And it was so amazingly more easy! You just download it from their very clear website, burn it on a cd without worrying too much about anything, put it in your computer, restart your computer et voila! It just boots properly and you are able to use a very nice operation system that is very fast too! I was able to see my hard drive with my non-backupped files on and I just plugged in an external hard drive to copy these files to. What's more common is simply that the CD is not checked for bootable media before the hard disk, so booting from the hard disk happens before the CD is even looked at

You need a Windows CD's recovery console or another person's Windows machine to put the hard drive into and run chkdsk to fix.Zeroing the log almost certainly won't help here. "Dual booting", what do you mean? Because I went to boot from CD ROM with XP Home to fix my issue or because you think I have 2 hard drives? I only have one hard drive, I think, and Dell takes part of it for Dell stuff
What does "chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process" mean?

How did you capture these since Windows is not yet running so you could not have software running? (I guessing you used a command line pipe.) Actually what you're seeing is a separate copy of Windows 7 running in a virtual machine. Martha February 2, 2013 3:52 PM hi, I've run into the same problem, but in my case when it boots after "windows will now check....", it says: cannot open volume for direct access

The last hard drive failure I had was a seagate HD that failed after 49500 hours ( is that a normal lifespan for a hard drive ) Based upon your comment I also tried to run spin rite, but I can get the computer to boot to the windows xp disc, but not to the spin rite disc, ( it keeps saying try f1 to reboot or f2 for set up utility.) I have changed the boot order in the BIOS to boot to the cd rom drive first so I dont understand why it will boot no problem to the xp disc but not to spin rite. You will probably have better luck using a linux live cd or removing the hard drive from your computer and placing it in a different working computer to retrieve the files

But I wished someone would have told us newbbies the Windows disk may not be boot-able until you run it from the "safe mode" screen and press any key within 4 seconds! I started checking for problems with my cd drive because it wasn't auto running. After crawling through the MSKB, Experts Exchange, MSDN and sundry websites all extolling the virtues of a solution to these problems, I only found one that worked, and it has been reliably serving me for the better part of two weeks on seventeen PCs to date

On computers running Windows 2003 SP1, chkdsk automatically creates a shadow copy, so you can check volumes that are 'in use' by another program or process. Use chkdsk, chkntfs or the FSUTIL dirty commands to set or query the volumes 'dirty' bit so that Windows will run chkdsk when the computer is restarted

If you don't have an XP SP3 boot CD, see how to create it from an older CD in : How to Slipstream Windows XP Service Pack 3 to Create an Integrated XP Setup Disk with SP 3. It's a SATA drive and the Windows CD can't access it because it's missing it's drivers, I don't have a floppy drive so I can't load drivers through there
