For future reference, board a Thameslink train at Gatwick (the likely destinations for this service are Bedford, Luton, Peterborough, Cambridge or King's Lynn) and change at Farringdon for a Crossrail train to Paddington. Accordingly to Gagravarr's comment you could also go from Victoria Line to Oxford Circus, then a cross-platform change to the Bakerloo Line up to Paddington

Oyster Card (London) - Rail Plus Australia

Having it with us before we left Australia meant we could use it on the train the minute we landed at Heathrow Airport at 6.10am! Just one less thing to worry when you are tired and jet lagged. As feared, this diappeared quite quickly however loading the cards with more money was not as much of a problem as we were expecting from reading other reviews of the product on this site

For us, since we walk a lot, our tab on the oyster cards was quite low (far less than 12 pounds each per day), so for some things it was not a savings to do the 2-4-1 deals. Re: Oyster Card Apr 18, 2015, 9:27 PM Using your chip and pin Visa card, it is also easy and quick to top up your Oyster Card at the machines in the tube stations should you need to add more money

Instead of buying a paper ticket (which costs more), you can work out how often you will use public transport in London and top-up your Oyster Card for Visitors accordingly. The pay as you go money on the Oyster Card is timeless so you can use any money left over for future visits to London or give it to someone else who is visiting London

The car service as suggested by janisj is okay also but again it's a matter of convenience against saving some money and I can see both sides of the argument. As noted, if you want to use the 2 4 1's you need a ticket validated by the national railroad system...a paper ticket issued only at national rail stations such as Victoria, Paddington, Waterloo, London Bridge and the like

Re: To Stansted Airport with Oyster Card? 08 November 2012, 9:52 Actually, a quirk of the system is that a ticket to Elsenham is acceptable at Stansted (coming from London). Re: To Stansted Airport with Oyster Card? 05 December 2012, 1:21 Stansted is well beyond the Transport for London zones, so Oyster cards cannot be used for journeys to the airport

Due to limitations of the pay as you go system, railcard discounts for Friends and Family Railcards, Network Cards or Partner Cards are not available on Oyster pay as you go. Using your Oyster pay as you go card is very easy, simply remember to touch in on the yellow reader at the start of your journey and touch out at the end of your journey

What is the most time efficient way to go from Gatwick to "Old Billingsgate" ( Monument tube station is nearby)? Public transportation is preferred over taxi. For your destination possible options include: Gatwick Airport to London Bridge by Thameslink, then walk across the Bridge and you are soon there (for this route see note below) Gatwick Airport to London Bridge by Thameslink, and then change to a Southeastern service to Cannon Street, which is closer (and on the proper side of the Thames) to your destination (for this route see note below) Please note that from Saturday 20 December 2014 to around January 2018 there will be a major work starting soon at London Bridge, which will mean that Thameslink services will NOT stop at London Bridge station
