The Jungle literally meets the beach here, very beautiful and un-crowded (off-season) full of monkeys and sloths that you can actually see, apparently home to a very poisonous yellow snake too, so you may not want to go poking around off-trail like I did

There, near the entrance of town, an old barge sits anchored where the coal black sands of Playa Negra swirl with the ground quartz and sea shells of Playa Chino. Beachfront cabins, restaurants and shops line the streets almost all the way to Manzanillo; numerous budget hostels cater to surfers and young backpackers who frequent the area, while posh resorts offer comfort and luxury as you move south outside Puerto Viejo toward Playa Cocles, Playa Chiquita and Punta Uva
This was my favorite beach because it was the best looking sand and water, but also because we had it nearly to ourselves! There are some resorts just behind the sand, along with a bar or two, but all very quite. When were you in Puerto Viejo?
