Swollen Lymph Nodes
White blood cells and the lymphatic system are important parts of the immune system, helping the body rid itself of germs, cells or foreign matter that could cause disease.Small, bean-shaped structures called lymph nodes are found near the lymphatic vessels. For example, a person with strep throat might well develop swollen lymph nodes in the neck.In other instances, swollen lymph nodes could indicate injury, lymphoma (cancer of the lymphatic system), AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome), or a cancer that has spread to the lymph nodes from another part of the body. What are the symptoms of swollen lymph nodes? In general, lymph nodes larger than 1 centimeter in diameter are considered to be abnormal

How long can lymph nodes stay swollen? - Lymphoma - Hodgkin's and Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma Forum - Cancer Forums
Most of the common symptoms for lymphoma are also caused by many other things; cold, influenza, infection, allergy, other forms of cancer, constant prodding of a node, menopause, hypochondria, cannibal laughing sickness...they range from the mundanely common to the ridiculously rare, with lymphoma being one of the rarer reasons. That number is both small enough for us to say that what you have is probably is not lymphoma, and large enough for us to say that we cannot tell you that what you have is definitely not lymphoma
Painless lymph node swelling of the axilla, neck or groin may be accompanied by fever, chills, night sweats, fatigue, weight loss, itching and various other symptoms. The condition of the axillary lymph nodes is very important for staging of breast cancer which can help to determine the prognosis and clinical course of the disease, as well as indicate the best treatment option
These all seem to state that due to the non tender nature, the size of the nodes (which are 4 times the healthy size), no infection and the position (level 5) of the nodes, cancer of some sort may be the cause. It is not intended to be and should not be interpreted as medical advice or a diagnosis of any health or fitness problem, condition or disease; or a recommendation for a specific test, doctor, care provider, procedure, treatment plan, product, or course of action
Benefits and Drawbacks of Sentinel Lymph Node Dissection
To make sure that women have the appropriate lymph node surgery, the American Society for Clinical Oncology released guidelines on sentinel lymph node biopsy for people diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer. The procedure allows critical treatment insights with the least possible surgery and trauma. There are many good reasons why women want to minimize the number of underarm lymph nodes that are removed
I had the same issues that Mary did with some redness in my breast; the explanation for me (after antibiotics) was that the lymph fluid was redirecting. If you can work up a little exertion that's good (just don't start swinging that left arm yet)! Your diaphragm can act like a bellows which causes suction in side your body and you need that to keep those lymph fluids moving
Swollen lymph nodes - No More Panic
However being the cyber-chondriac I am, a few months later I started worrying about it again and went to my GP who carried out blood tests and an examination and again found nothing concerning. the reasons the docs gave you are all perfectly valid reasons for haivng permanently enlarged glands - illness as a child can indeed cause enalrged glands permanently

Do you see the needle on the left side of the picture that we are using to obtain the aspirate sample? The aspirated material is put on a microscope slide for analysis by a pathologist. If the fine needle aspirate report comes back that cancer is suspected we will remove the lymph node, no matter what the other laboratory tests indicate
Lymph Node Locations - Picture, Diagram, Structures, Functions
Throughout the human body, there are about 500 to 600 lymph nodes which are disseminated widely in clusters mostly in the underarm, neck, groin, chest and abdomen. The group locations of greatest clinical importance include the following areas, namely, groin, armpit, neck, under the jaw and chin, behind the ears and on the back of the head
Lymph Node Involvement and Breast Cancer
Having cancer cells in the lymph nodes under your arm suggests an increased risk of the cancer spreading. When lymph nodes are free, or clear, of cancer, the test results are negative. As lymph fluid leaves the breast and eventually goes back into the bloodstream, the lymph nodes try to catch and trap cancer cells before they reach other parts of the body
Physicians should demonstrate caution regarding false-negative results; success of the procedure (i.e., low false-negative rates) is determined by several quality indicators, including team experience, case volume, and adherence to established protocols in nuclear medicine, pathology, and surgery. Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy: What Breast Cancer Patients Need to Know
You will then return to the nuclear medicine department a few hours later, and pictures will be taken which show the pathways the dye takes as it leaves the breast. Initial studies have shown that most surgeons need to do 20-30 sentinel lymph node biopsy procedures before obtaining accurate results using the technique
Lymph Nodes: Locations and Functions
Functions of Lymph Nodes As already mentioned, lymph nodes are essential organs of the immune system and play a crucial role in the normal functioning of the system. Though swelling and inflammation of the lymph nodes is a part of autoimmune response and it subsides on its own, if the swelling lasts for more than two weeks, consult your doctor immediately
Injections put fluid into tissue that is distributed in part by the lymph system, so this can also tax an impaired system.Lack of exercise or improper type of exercise: Muscle movement helps lymph vessels to contract and move lymph. If the biopsy is positive (cancer cells are present), more nodes are removed in the same operation; if it is negative, the surgeon may decide not to remove more nodes.Knowing the status of some lymph nodes does not give you proof of the status of other lymph nodes, but the chances are that if the first ones tested are cancer-free, the others are too
Some infections (such as strep throat and chicken pox), certain medicines, immune system diseases, and cancers like lymphoma and leukemia can cause this kind of swelling. But if nearby lymph nodes are the only other place cancer is found beyond the main (primary) site, surgery to remove the main tumor and the nearby lymph nodes may be able to get rid of it all
(2) The axillary region: these nodes in the underarm region receive lymph from vessels that drain the arm, the walls of the thorax, the breast, and the upper walls of the abdomen. The follicle centre cells within the germinal centres consist of cells with cleaved nuclei (centrocytes) and cells with larger more open nuclei and several nucleoli (centroblasts)
If your doctors feel that the affected lymph nodes are quite clearly linked to the primary cancer, it may not be necessary to remove a node or take a biopsy. If the nodes do contain cancer cells, either another operation can be done to remove other nearby nodes, or they can be treated with radiotherapy or chemotherapy
Any swollen lymphatic node needs to be monitored carefully and your primary care physician should be notified if there is no obvious reason, it grows rapidly, there is swelling of lymphatic nodes thru out the body or anything else that might be causing concern. Then lymph nodes are placed thru out the body in strategic locations as filters for this lymphatic system and the trap viruses, bacteria, cancer cells as well as other substances that are unwanted and they then safely are eliminated from the body

anywhere there is skin, there is lymph flow and where there is lymph flow, you could have a lymph node, although lymph nodes tend to reside in lymph node stations like the arm pit or groin areas.but that is not the most conviencing evidence. Tumor marker is one of the important tests, but it has to be correlated with physical finding, clinical presentation, and other tests to make final diagnosis
