In the first decades of the 19th century, no one realistically imagined the abolition of such a despicable institution, but there was considerable pressure to abolish the Atlantic slave trade, or the continued importation of bonded Africans onto American soil. This meant that if seized in Southern territory (which was the likely outcome), blacks would remain enslaved and be auctioned off nonetheless, completely contradicting the spirit of the act
